  • Dr Margaret Faux (PhD)

    Founder & Chief Executive Officer

    Dr Margaret Faux is a nurse-turned-lawyer and Australia’s leading authority on Medicare billing and compliance. With more than 40 years’ experience across hospital wards, courtrooms, and health administration, she has personally processed hundreds of thousands of medical bills and overseen millions more.

    Margaret holds a PhD in Medicare claiming and compliance and has been administering Australian medical billing since Medicare began. Her expertise also extends globally, with hands-on experience managing medical billing and coding in multiple countries. She is endlessly curious about the inner workings of Medicare, private insurance, universal health coverage, and how nations pay for healthcare.

    A widely published author in both peer-reviewed journals and popular media, Margaret holds an adjunct academic appointment at Southern Cross University, where she contributes to research in medical billing and coding. As an entrepreneur, she is passionate about improving health system efficiency by digitising outdated manual processes through smart technology.

    She is the author of Medical Bills Made Easy – the first Australian consumer book to demystify the complexities of Medicare and private health insurance, empowering patients with the knowledge they need to navigate the system with confidence.

  • Martha Meares

    Chief Financial Officer

    Martha joined Synapse in November 2015, bringing with her a wealth of experience in professional services management. Prior to joining Synapse, she spent 14 years at Minter Ellison Lawyers – one of Australia’s leading law firms – where she held several senior roles, including her final position as Finance Director. During her time there, Martha developed a strong reputation for financial leadership, strategic insight, and operational excellence.

    At Synapse, Martha leads the company’s financial management, working closely with Dr Margaret Faux to ensure the ongoing financial stability, sustainability, and success of the organisation. A long-time friend and trusted colleague of Margaret’s, Martha is deeply aligned with Synapse’s mission. She is continually inspired by Margaret’s vision to reform and modernise healthcare administration, and she shares her commitment to improving transparency, equity, and efficiency in Australia’s health system.

    Martha’s steady hand, extensive expertise, and shared values make her a vital part of the Synapse leadership team.

  • Guruprasad Krishnamurthy

    Chief Operations Officer

    Guru is the Chief Operations Officer at Synapse, where he’s been steering the company’s global operations for over a decade. With more than 22 years in the healthcare industry, Guru is known for his calm leadership, deep expertise in revenue cycle management, and passion for using smart systems and automation to make healthcare admin work better for everyone.

    Since moving to Australia in 2017, he’s built a strong understanding of the local health system and has helped Synapse seamlessly integrate international teams to meet strict compliance and service standards. Guru leads high-performing remote teams across multiple time zones, always focused on delivering reliable, high-quality outcomes for clients.

    Before stepping into his current role, Guru was Deputy General Manager – Operations at Synapse India, overseeing large-scale medical billing services for Australian hospitals and clinics. He’s also worked in senior roles with U.S. healthcare clients, gaining hands-on experience in American billing, coding, and finance while based in Atlanta.

    Guru holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Madras. He’s driven by a simple goal: to build smart, scalable healthcare services that improve lives, support providers, and bring transparency and trust to the system.

  • Hridesh Kohli

    General Manager, India

    With over 25 years of diverse industry experience - including senior roles in technology support, banking, and healthcare - Hridesh brings a wealth of expertise to the Synapse leadership team. Holding a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, he has successfully managed large, cross-functional teams across multiple geographies and domains, consistently delivering operational excellence and driving continuous improvement.

    Since joining Synapse in 2014, Hridesh has played a pivotal role in developing and leading the Chennai site. He oversees a wide portfolio including operations support, HR and administration, safety and compliance, customer service, and the AIMAC training academy. Under his leadership, the Chennai office has become a high-performing, engaged, and low-turnover team, with staff attrition consistently below 2%.

    Prior to Synapse, Hridesh spent eight years managing banking operations in the UK and four years in technical support for a major American ISP. His career spans service delivery, project management, client relationships, complaints remediation, payments processing, quality assurance, site migration and talent development.

    What excites Hridesh most about Synapse is its bold, values-driven culture. He is proud to work for an organisation that is unafraid to do the right thing, even when it’s difficult, and that fosters trust, collaboration, and growth. He is energised by Synapse’s expanding impact across the Australian healthcare system – particularly its focus on placing patients at the heart of everything it does.

  • Rio Diep

    Chief Technology Officer

    Rio joined Synapse in February 2013 as a fresh graduate from the University of Technology Sydney, where he earned a Bachelor of IT with Distinction. Over more than a decade, he has grown with the company, becoming a driving force behind its technological evolution and innovation.

    A hands-on leader with deep expertise in healthcare tech, Rio was instrumental in the development of Synapps MBS, Australia’s first comprehensive medical billing app. He has since gone on to co-develop Atlas and the Synapse Rules Engine – groundbreaking tools built with Margaret that power intelligent, compliant, and efficient healthcare billing.

    His commitment to staying ahead of the curve in software development, MBS changes, and cybersecurity has kept Synapse at the cutting edge. Under his leadership, Synapse achieved and maintains ISO 27001 certification for Data Security and ISO 9001 for Quality Management. One of his early contributions – migrating the company’s infrastructure to the cloud – proved invaluable, enabling zero downtime for staff and clients during the COVID-19 crisis.

    Appointed Director of Information Technology in 2019 and now Chief Technology Officer, Rio leads a distributed team focused on automation, user experience, and delivering cost-effective, scalable digital solutions for Synapse and its partners.

    Rio loves that the Synapse IT roadmap is filled with exciting developments – each one designed not just to push the boundaries of innovation, but to support something much bigger: universal access to safe, fair, and affordable healthcare. Every system enhancement, every integration, and every new tool is purpose-built to improve efficiency, transparency, and equity in healthcare delivery – ensuring that technology serves providers, payers and patients in meaningful, lasting ways.

  • Heather Grain

    Health Informatician | Coding Manager

    Heather has international and national expertise in the development, implementation, management and governance of health information and information systems and education.

    She provides a practical implementation-based approach combined with a strong academic background. As an expert in health data modelling and concept representation she has worked with hospitals, primary care, district nursing and diagnostic service and with national programs in Europe, USA, Australia, Brazil, China.

    Heather is active in the implementation of eHealth solutions, including those using SNOMED CT advising EHR and clinical knowledge management implementations, natural language processing, mapping and data specification.

    She is also recognised as a leader, having been elected by her peers in the Standards community as Member of IFHIMA Strategic Directions Pillar, Past Chair of HL7 Terminology Authority, Past Co-Chair HL7 Vocabulary Working Group, and Convenor ISO TC215 WG3 Semantic Content. Past Chair of SNOMED International Education SIG, and expert member of the eLearning Advisory Committee.

  • Bruce Topperwien

    Senior Consultant

    Bruce is the most recent addition to Synapse’s executive team, joining as a consultant in August 2025 after more than a decade as General Manager and General Counsel at the Commonwealth Government Professional Services Review Agency (PSR) - also known as the Medicare Regulator.

    A highly accomplished legal and regulatory professional, Bruce brings extensive expertise in administrative, compensation, veterans’, and health law, backed by a proven track record of public sector leadership and reform.

    At Synapse, Bruce will contribute to an increasing number of consulting projects that demand sophisticated interpretation of Australia’s complex Medicare and broader health insurance legal frameworks. He will also support Synapse’s education initiatives and play a key role in advancing the Synapse Rules Engine – Australia’s only real-time medical billing validation tool outside of Medicare. His unparalleled legal insight will ensure accuracy, compliance, and payment integrity across all initiatives.

    A strategic leader and skilled communicator, Bruce also offers deep expertise in veterans’ entitlements, compensation systems, and legal education. He has developed professional training programs, led high-performing teams, and fostered strong collaborative relationships across government. With a focus on operational excellence, integrity, and innovation, Bruce consistently delivers impactful legal and regulatory solutions in service of the public interest.

    He is excited to be working with Synapse because of its clear focus on improving healthcare access and affordability for all Australians – and on keeping the health system honest.
